    This year, proposals were sought from the research community to help identify solutions to emerging and complex environmental problems. The research call highlighted the importance of a clean, healthy and well-protected environment for our health, our wellbeing and our quality of life. With up to €m available for new research projects to. EPA estimates that exhaust from passenger vehicles is the top source of air pollution in many of the cities in this country. Besides the health risks associated with gasoline fumes, diesel exhaust from idling trucks and buses can make asthma and bronchitis worse. Exhaust also adds to smog, acid rain and global climate change.

    The U.S. EPA's storm water program addressed storm water runoff in two phases. Phase I addressed storm water runoff from large and medium MS4s. Large municipalities with a separate storm sewer system serving a population greater than , and medium municipalities with a service population between , and , had to obtain NPDES permits.
